Hris platform: the features of hris, an hris features list, hris system features and the features of human resource information system that actually matter

Hris platform is a claim that other things can be built on the product, and features of hris is the list that claim usually hides behind. Both are worth sorting by cost of ownership rather than by presence, because the expensive features are not the ones with the longest descriptions.

Figures on this page come from the EOR Compass Pricing Index: 7 vendors with a verified published price, median $499 per employee per month, checked against each vendor's own pricing page.

Sorting a feature list by what it costs you

  1. Separate configured from bought. Some features arrive working and some arrive as a capability you must configure. Ask which is which, because the second kind is a project with your name on it.
  2. Ask what each feature assumes. Workflow engines assume somebody designs workflows. Analytics assume clean historical data. A feature whose assumption you cannot meet is not a feature you have.
  3. Ask what a platform claim gives you. Public documentation, a sandbox without a sales call, and write access to the objects you care about. All three, or the word platform is marketing.

The features of hris that earn their keep

A dated record, self service, document management with expiry, permissions with more than two levels, and an export. Those five are used by every employer that has them and they are the ones whose absence is felt weekly.

Everything else is conditional. Succession planning, engagement surveys and workforce analytics are genuinely valuable to organisations that have the data and somebody whose job it is to use it, and are shelfware everywhere else.

An hris features list read backwards

Read the list for what is missing rather than what is present. No dated history, no audit trail, no configurable retention, no second administrator: each of those is a decision the vendor made and a cost you will carry.

Missing items are rarely advertised, so the way to find them is to ask what the product does not do. Vendors worth buying from answer that question directly and the answer is the most useful sentence in the evaluation.

Hris system features and the configuration budget

A rich feature set is a standing invitation to configure, and configuration is the cost that nobody books. Organisations that buy a broad product without funding somebody to own it end up frozen at the implementation settings while the organisation changes around them.

Either fund the ownership or buy the narrower product. Both are defensible; buying the broad product and hoping is the option that reliably disappoints.

Common questions

What are the features of human resource information system in the strictest sense?
The record itself, the permissions over it, and the reporting from it. Everything else is a module attached to those three, however it is packaged.
Are workflow engines worth it?
Where several approvals differ by department or country, yes. Where every approval goes to one person, a workflow engine is a configuration burden with no return.
How do we judge an analytics module?
By asking it a question you already know the answer to, using your own history. Analytics demonstrations use clean data, and clean data is the part you do not have.
Does a platform claim justify a higher price?
Only if the documentation and sandbox are real, because that is what turns future integrations from vendor projects into your own work. Without them the premium buys a word.
