Staff augmentation software

Staff augmentation software manages people who work for you without being your employees: contractors, agency workers and consultants. The two problems it exists to solve are visibility, because these people are invisible in the HR system, and control, because spending on them is frequently unmanaged.

Visibility of who is actually working here

Most organisations cannot readily say how many contingent workers they have, where they are, or when their engagements end. That matters for security, for cost and for risk. A single register of engagements with start and end dates, owner and rate is most of the value, and it is frequently the whole of it.

Status is the risk that matters

A contractor who works like an employee may be one in the eyes of a tax authority or a tribunal, regardless of the contract. Software can record the assessment and prompt a review when the engagement changes shape; it cannot make the judgement. Keeping the assessment and its date is the part that helps later.

Keep the records separate

Contingent workers should not sit in the employee record as though they were employees, because that corrupts headcount, triggers processes that do not apply, and confuses retention. A linked register is the right shape: visible alongside employees, counted separately, governed by its own rules.

Questions people ask about staff augmentation software

Should contractors appear in headcount?

Reported separately and counted in cost. Mixing them into headcount makes every people metric ambiguous.

Who owns the contingent workforce?

Frequently nobody, which is the underlying problem. Procurement and HR both have a claim and somebody has to hold the register.

Does software reduce status risk?

It records assessments and prompts reviews. The judgement, and the liability, remain with the organisation.
