A portable time clock is bought for places a wall clock cannot go: a site hut with no data run, a marquee, a yard that moves every few months. Portability is a power and connectivity decision before it is a size one.
Portable means two things and they are not the same
One sense is physical: light enough to move between sites, usually with an internal battery. The other is logistical: works without a fixed network, storing punches locally and syncing later over a mobile connection or a memory stick. A device can be one without the other, and buying the physically small one when you needed the offline one is the common error on remote sites.
Offline storage is what you are really testing
Ask how many punches the device holds with no connection and what happens when that buffer fills. A clock that silently overwrites the oldest punches when full has destroyed the record you are legally expected to keep. Ask also what a sync failure looks like from the device: a visible warning on the unit is worth more than a dashboard nobody on site can see.
Power is the constraint that actually bites
Internal batteries are quoted in ideal conditions and shrink in the cold, and a clock that dies at the start of a shift produces a morning of handwritten times somebody has to key in. Specify a mains fallback, a charge indicator a supervisor can read from a distance, and a spare unit if the site is far enough that a dead clock costs a visit.
The record still has to reconcile
Federal recordkeeping expects hours worked each day and each week, whatever device captured them. Portable units tend to produce gaps: a shift started on one unit and finished on another, a sync that landed after the pay run closed. Agree who reconciles those, and when, before the first period rather than during it.
