Fingerprint time clock

A fingerprint time clock is the cheapest way to stop one person clocking in for another, and it fails most often in the workplaces that want it most. Hands that are wet, cold, worn by abrasive work or covered in adhesive do not read reliably, and those are normal hands in the trades where buddy punching is a real loss.

Enrol the hardest ten people first

Not volunteers. The bricklayer, the chef, the cleaner, the person with a scar across a thumb. If the device handles those ten it will handle everyone, and if it does not you have learned that in a pilot rather than in a queue on a Monday morning. Count rejected reads per hundred punches over a fortnight and compare that to whatever the vendor quoted.

Where it is the right purchase

Single site, fixed entrance, clean indoor work, and a documented history of punches that did not happen. Retail back offices, light warehousing and offices on shift patterns all do well. The reader is inexpensive, enrolment takes an afternoon, and the problem stops without anybody needing to carry a phone.

Where something else is better

Food preparation, construction, cold stores and healthcare with frequent glove changes. In those settings a contactless reader or a card with a photograph taken at the punch gives a more reliable record and fewer arguments, even though it looks like a weaker control on paper. A reader that rejects people daily is not a control, it is a queue.

Questions people ask about fingerprint time clock

How accurate are these readers?

False matches are rare and false rejections are not. The number that affects you is the rejection rate on your own workforce, which only a trial reveals.

What if somebody cannot enrol at all?

A small share of any workforce cannot produce a usable read. The alternative must exist from day one and must not look like a punishment.

Is the fingerprint image stored?

Usually a mathematical template rather than an image, and often on the device. Get that in writing, because it changes what you must tell staff.
