Compensation dashboard

A compensation dashboard is read by three audiences who need different things and are usually given the same screen. An executive wants cost and risk. A reward specialist wants structure and outliers. A line manager wants their own team and what they may do about it. Building one view for all three produces a screen that nobody acts on.

The executive view

Total cost against budget, the run rate into next year, and the two or three risks worth knowing: people significantly below range, compression against new hires, and any unexplained gap between groups. Three numbers and two exceptions is a better executive dashboard than twenty charts, because it prompts a decision rather than a browse.

The reward view

Range penetration by job family, distribution against guidelines, outliers in both directions, and movement since the last cycle. This is the working view and it needs to be filterable to the level of an individual, because the useful work is investigating specific cases rather than admiring aggregates.

The manager view, and its limits

Their own team, position in range, time since last increase, and what the guideline suggests. Managers should not see other teams, and the permission model has to enforce that rather than rely on nobody looking. The most common failure in this area is a dashboard that quietly exposes pay across an organisation to anybody with a login.

Questions people ask about compensation dashboard

Which single measure matters most?

Range penetration by group, because it exposes both structural drift and potential inequity in one view.

Should managers see market data?

A guideline derived from it, usually yes. Raw benchmark data invites arguments about the source rather than about the person.

How often should it be refreshed?

Monthly is enough outside a review cycle, and daily during one. A dashboard nobody opens between cycles should be a report instead.
